My Bar Mitzvah project was to arrange for a Pet Adoption Day with the Monmouth County SPCA. I called the SPCA and asked if they would be interested in allowing me to organize the event. They were very excited to have the opportunity to get the word out about their wonderful adoptable animals. I asked permission to use the facilities at the Glendola Firehouse on Belmar Blvd. In Wall Township.

I asked my neighbors, Mrs. Betz and Mr. Lorch, as well as area businesses donate fliers. My local schools were generous enough to allow me to distribute those fliers. I also had two newspapers, The Asbury Park Press and The Coast Star print stories about the adoption day. Several radio stations ran PSA's reminding people to donate food, money and to please come adopt a pet.

The day was a huge success. We had a steady stream of visitors throughout the afternoon. The SPCA program organizer told me that it was the most successful pet adoption day she has ever participated in. I chose to sponsor a pet adoption day because of my love for animals. My family has rescued three cats that now live with us. We have also fostered many kittens. Because of this involvement, I have become aware of the great amount of homeless animals. I wanted to do something that would benefit them. We collected almost $500, plus got at least that much in donated items, and I am proud to say several animals were adopted.
